Why am I getting connection slower than capability of my modem?

Some of the factors that determine your computer’s performance include the processor
speed, the amount of available RAM, and the number of programs running, among others.
These factors also determine how your computer performs when connecting to the Internet.
You may want to start by checking these and making sure that what appears to be slow
speeds is not simply a general  computer performance issue.

Static electricity caused by radio signals, power lines, and other sources interfere with most
56K modem signals, forcing them to fall back to  42-50Kbps. There may also be a problem
with your modem. If you are connecting at a very slow speed (around 30Kbps or lower),
make sure your modem has the latest drivers installed. Also, make sure that the cord from
your modem to the phone socket is as short as possible.

Why is it taking long for pages to load?

Slow-loading pages could be as a result of a noisy telephone line, which often occurs in
places  where there are many telephone extensions that are not built for Internet
connections. It is also more likely to occur if you have a 28.8Kbps modem. Another way to
soup up your connections is to add memory to your computer. It could also be due to the
site you are visiting, either the bandwidth to the web server is very low or the page is very
    heavy

Normally get a very good connection speed but downloads from
some sites are quite slow. Can you explain why?

There are a number of factors that can affect this:
      •   The speed of the server hosting the site you are downloading from.
      •   The amount of traffic currently on the Internet.
      •   The number of people downloading from the same server at the
           same time as you.

Why does my connection sometimes disconnect or stop working?

If a call-waiting feature is enabled on your line, an incoming call could cause disconnection.
You may disable the call-waiting feature before connecting to the Internet. Calling the
customer service can do this. If your phone is in a PABX environment there could be line
noise or interference from the switching of the PABX, this may cause the modem to
disconnect. You can make some changes to your dial-in settings so that new calls do not
interrupt your session. Also, if someone picks up another extension of your telephone line,
this may also cause your modem to disconnect.
